The 2022 project year began in April during the rainy season with the tree planting campaign on the slopes of Kilimanjaro in the village of Shimbwe in the Moshi District.
In June, Tanzanian beekeepers then learned the German way of beekeeping during a visit to Kiel.
The third and final part of the project was to give pupils from SIA Primary School and SIA Secondary School in Shimbwe an insight into the life of bees and beekeeping. Pedagogical staff from Kiel, together with two Tanzanian beekeepers, conducted two workshop days each with the topics: “All about Bees” and “The life of Bees and how to keep them” in the two participating schools.
In the primary school, the pupils were introduced to the life of bees through play. The children enthusiastically imitated the bees' wagging dance.
The children actively helped to prepare the beehives. Each of them had brought a handful of lemongrass from home, which was used to rub into the beehive. The smell of the grass attracts wild honey bees. Several bees came curiously into the classroom during the activity, which impressed the pupils.
At the neighboring SIA Shimbwe Secondary School, we were able to inspire the students with the production of cosmetics from bee products. Beeswax hand cream and propolis wound ointment were very popular with the workshop participants.
There was also a honey tasting at both schools before the 5 beehives were hung in the trees on the school grounds.
The last project day was once again dedicated to the women of the Mapendo Women Group. Interesting facts about bees, tasting of German and Tanzanian honey and, of course, enthusiasm for making cosmetics.
